- January 16, The Congo president, Laurent Kabila was assassinated by his bodyguard. Kabila’s son, Joseph, takes over admid continuing civil war.
- February 9, The US submarine Greeneville, sinds a Japanese fishing boat, killing 9.
- February 20, FBI agent Robert Hanssen is charged with syping for Russia for 15 years.
- April 2, A US spy plane and Chinese jet collide. 24 members of the US plane were detained for 11 days and released after the US issued a formal statement of regret.
- June 6, The National Academy of Sciences Report announces that global warming is on the rise and that human activity is largely responsible.
- July 23, 178 nations (without US) reach climate accord, which rescues, though dilutes the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
- September 11, Hijackers take over 4 planes, 3 of the jetliners are rammed into the twin towers of New York City and the Pentagon. The fourth hijacked plane crashes 80 miles outside of Pittsburgh. Nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives that day. Within days, Islamic militant Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist network are identified as the parties behind the attack.
- Beginning on September 18 and lasting over several weeks letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to several news media offices and to 2 Democratic Senators, Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. Five people were killed and 17 other infected.
