- April 20, Columbine school shooting 12 students killed, one teacher, and then the 2 gunmen killed themselves.
- July 15, John F. Kennedy, wife Carolyn Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette are lost at sea in a plane crash near Martha’s Vineyard, off the Massachusetts coast.
- August 17, A magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Turkey kills more than 15,600 and leaves 600,000 homeless.
- October 12, The Pakistani government is overthrown in the midst of economic strife and fighting with India over Kashmir.
- All year – the Y2K bug (computer chips thinking that 1/1/00 = 1/1/1900 instead of 2000) concerns many. Certain theorists warn of Armageddon.
